EssayThis part of the project is open to the teacher. The best essays will go in the interactive book, but the subject of those essays is up to the teacher and the standards he/she needs to cover. The essay may be about how Things Fall Apart both follows and deviates from the Hero's Journey model or how White Fang adheres to it once the main figure is introduced in book two. As for my students, they will write an essay in early October that includes an overall personal goal--either one that has been completed or one that is planned for the future--and the obstacles in their way. For each body paragraph they will describe the obstacle, how they will overcome it, and compare it to an obstacle/monster from the Odyssey.
